Understanding how surface drainage is coupled to subsurface behaviour is important for minimising the risks of surface discharge of pollutants during storms. Our laboratory has a bespoke facility for studying these problems.
Water distribution systems need to be monitored for quantity (leakage) and quality (microbiological changes). A number of research projects in the group have investigated these phenomena with a view to improving UK water infrastructure.
Recent NERC and EPSRC funded research (with Cambridge, UCL and Swiss colleagues) has developed a radar system for imaging the dynamics of large scale mass flows. The system is installed at Vallee de la Sionne in Switzerland (shown in the image).
